Ayah Gatot, bernama Suwantyo, seorang pejuang kemerdekaan yang pernah menjadi Tentara Pelajar. Di masa perang kemerdekaan ayahnya bertugas di bawah komando Jenderal Gatot Subroto. Dari nama tokoh militer kharismatik itulah, ayahnya kemudian memberi nama anaknya “Gatot”.
Ayah Gatot pensiun dengan pangkat terakhir Letnal Kolonel Infanteri dan tugas terakhir sebagai Kepala Kesehatan Jasmani di Kodam XIII/Merdeka, Sulawesi Utara. Sedangkan ibunda Gatot, anak seorang Kepala Pertamina di Cilacap, memiliki tiga orang kakak kandung yang mengabdi sebagai prajurit TNI AD, TNI-AL dan TNI-AU.
Karena anak tentara, sejak kecil Gatot hidup berpindah-pindah. Setelah dari Tegal, ia pindah ke.Cimahi, Jawa Barat, hingga kelas 1 Sekolah Dasar. Setelah itu ia pindah Cilacap sampai kelas 2 SMP. Lalu ia pindah ke Solo hingga tamat SMA.
Sebenarnya Gatot ingin menjadi arsitek. Makanya ia mendaftar ke Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Tapi mengetahui anaknya mau masuk l UGM, ibundanya berpesan: “Ayahmu hanya seorang pensiunan. Kalau kamu masuk UGM, maka adik-adikmu bisa tidak sekolah.”
Mendengar hal tersebut, Gatot berubah haluan. Diam-diam dia berangkat ke Semarang, mendaftar Akabri melalui Kodam Diponegoro. Sekembalinya dari Semarang, ia memberitahu ibunya bahwa ia sudah mendaftar ke Akabri. Ibunya langsung mengizinkan dengan pesan, “Jika kamu menjadi tentara, kamu harus menjadi anggota RPKAD.”
Menurut Gatot, ibunya terobsesi anaknya menjadi anggota RPKAD karena rumah orang tua ibunya dekat dengan markas RPKAD di Cilacap.
Setelah lulus Akabri 1982, Gatot berusaha masuk menjadi anggota Kopassus (nama baru RPKAD). Tapi dalam usaha pertama ia tidak diterima. Pada kesempatan berikutnya, setelah berpangkat Kapten, saat bertugas di Pusat Latihan Tempur di Baturaja, Sumsel, ia kembali mendaftar masuk Kopassus. Kembali tidak diterima.
Sebenarnya kesempatan tersebut sudah habis. Tapi Gatot tidak pernah menyerah. Ia terus berdoa kepada Allah SWT agar suatu hari bisa diterima menjadi prajurit Kopassus.
Kesempatan itu akhirnya datang setelah ia menjabat KSAD (25 Juli 2014–15 Juli 2015). Tak lama setelah pelantikan, Gatot memanggil Danjen Kopassus Mayjen TNI Agus Sutomo dan menyampaikan maksudnya ingin mendaftar pendidikan Kopassus. Tapi Agus Sutomo menyampaikan, “Tidak usah ikut pendidikan Pak, nanti Bapak saya kasih brevet kehormatan saja”.
Tapi Gatot menolak. Ia bersikukuh mau mendapat baret merah melalui jalur normal. Maka masuklah Gatot menjadi siswa Kopassus.
Ia mengikuti semua prosedur normal, mulai dari pendaftaran, ujian, hingga penyematan brevet komando dan baret di pantai Cilacap. Untuk itu, ia harus melalui ujian yang keras, antara lain senam jam 2 pagi, lalu direndam di kolam suci Kopassus di Batujajar. Kemudian longmarch, hingga berenang militer selama lebih 2 jam dari pantai Cilacap ke pulau Nusakambangan. Bahkan Gatot juga mengikuti pendidikan Sandi Yudha yang salah satu ujiannya harus menyusup masuk ke suatu tempat yang terkunci dan dikawal ketat oleh prajurit Kopassus. Ia lolos mulus.
Gatot akhirnya diyatakan lulus semua tahapan dan resmi diangkat menjadi keluarga besar Korps Baret Merah di pantai Permisan Cilacap, Jawa Tengah, pada 2 September 2014. Tidak seperti “brevet kehormatan” Kopassus yang disematkan di dada sebelah kiri penerimanya, brevet pasukan komando tersebut disematkan di dada sebelah kanan Gatot, sebagai tanda ia menerimanya melalui prosedur selayaknya yang harus dilalui setiap prajurit Kopassus.
Setelah resmi menjadi prajurit Kopassus, Gatot naik helikopter dari Cilacap ke Kartosuro (Markas Grup 2 Kopassus). Masih berbaret merah, pakai loreng, darah mengalir, masih pakai hitam-hitam samaran dan masih bau lumpur, ia langsung menuju makam kedua orang tuanya di Solo.
